Dinosaur Bar-B-Que

236 West Genesee St., Syracuse, NY 13202
Grade: A-

I visit a lot of bland and ordinary restrooms, so I can appreciate a good concept commode when it's pulled off. Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, a barbecue joint/biker bar near downtown Syracuse, certainly has a bathroom worthy of its crowd. Retro men's magazine covers - including issues entitled "Peril," "Frolic" and "Swank" - line the tops of the walls. There is a working condom dispenser (rarer and rarer these days) for when the badass biker dudes ride off into the sunset with their badass biker chicks. The urinals are enclosed with dividers that seem to be inspired by wooden horse stalls. There is a decent amount of graffiti spread throughout, but some of it is relatively creative and it definitely fits the setting.

The funny thing is that despite the purposefully grungey decor, there is actually a very nice restroom lying beneath. The walls are painted a classy deep red and lined with polished black tiles. The toilet and urinals are clean, the counter is made of impressive faux-marble, and the soap and toilet paper dispensers are modern and functional.

Sure, there was a lot of standing water on the counter. But if you've ever seen how busy Dinosaur Bar-B-Que is at all hours, you'd understand how it might be hard to keep the counter dry. At least it means that people are washing their hands. And sure, one of the soap dispensers seemed to have become detached and was lying on the counter. But I'm going to go ahead and assume that this is a result of two absolutely bloodthirsty badass biker convicts brawling over some redhead bombshell biker megababe, and to me, that adds to the allure.
